Position Summary
The Department of Theatre Arts invites part-time faculty candidates for Lecturer in Educational Theatre beginning Spring 2025 within the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. This faculty position will co-create and teach a new upper-level elective entitled “Selected Topics in Theatre: Introduction to Educational Theatre” and may teach other courses in Theatre Arts, depending on credentials of hire.
In all matters, faculty are expected to maintain the highest standards of professional ethics consistent with the UIW Mission. Official duties and responsibilities of part-time faculty members at the University include teaching and professional activities as assigned.
Essential Functions
Basic Instructional Duties:
- Prepare course outlines and teach based on approved departmental syllabi; prepare and deliver consistent, interactive lectures.
- Prepare and execute timely and meaningful assessments for assigned courses.
- Work collaboratively with departmental faculty to ensure standard curriculum outcomes are met.
- Be available outside of class to help students learn as well as answer their questions (1 hour per 3-hour class, physically and/or electronically).
- Adhere to UIW Faculty Handbook policies and procedures, including timely record keeping of student activities, fair and equitable evaluation of student performance, and timely feedback to students regarding their performance in the course.
- Conduct respectful relationships with faculty, staff, and students both in and outside the classroom.
- Maintain contact with the department chair and participate in meetings upon request.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Duties
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Ability to teach industry standards of construction, load-in, and strike of all scenic elements.
- Ability to communicate with the scenic designer, production manager, and other members of a production team.
- Ability to create working drawings.
- Ability to ensure that the scope of the scenic design can be accomplished with the resources available, including time, money, labor, and space.
- Ability to coordinate the build process with the paint division, so that elements are built in time to be painted.
- Ability to follow appropriate budgetary practices/guidelines.
- Ability to ensure that accurate and safe construction practices are followed.
- Ability to facilitate the integration of scenic elements into technical rehearsals.
- Knowledge of how to order and authorize the purchase of materials.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
- Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.
Required Education
Master's Degree in Theatre or Master's Degree in another discipline with at least 18 credit hours of theatre-related studies.
Required Work Experience
- Ten (10) years of experience teaching educational theater.
- Three (3) years of experience leading a high school theatre program/department.
Preferred Qualifications
- MA or PhD in Theatre Studies, Literary Criticism, or related field.
- Experience teaching theatre education in a college or university setting.
- Evidence of directing a one-act play that advanced to the State level.
- Evidence of teaching excellence through a high school administration recognition or from other state/regional/national certified organizations, such as TxETA, ATHE, etc.
- Evidence of creating theatre arts curriculum for the state of Texas
Required Certifications, Licenses or Registrations
State of Texas Approved Teaching Certification for Theatre (GRADES EC-12).
Work Hours
Tuesdays & Thursdays from 10:30 AM to 11:45 AM.
