Provost and VP for Academic Affairs
University of the Incarnate Word
San Antonio, TX, USA
11/15/2024
Leadership / Executive
Full Time
The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) seeks a mission-oriented, people-centered leader with the ability to work collaboratively across a complex institution as its next Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.
In 1881, the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word founded Incarnate Word College as a center of higher education for young women in San Antonio, TX. The College was admitted to membership in the Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in 1919 and joined the Texas Association of Colleges as a senior college in 1920. Today, UIW is the largest Catholic university in Texas and serves approximately 10,000 students globally. UIW is a Hispanic-Serving Institution with 54% of its students coming from Hispanic/Latino heritage. The institution has grown into a large, complex university with 11 colleges and schools that offer more than 125 majors, minors, and concentrations at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The University works with 22 different agencies which have accredited 46 separate degree programs, including a comprehensive collection of health sciences programs (nursing, optometry, pharmacy, osteopathic medicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and athletic training). UIW has multiple campuses across San Antonio, locations in Mexico and France, and a growing set of online and distance offerings through its School of Professional Studies.
As the University approaches its 150th anniversary, it has embarked on a strategic planning process focused on identifying opportunities to further advance its mission in an everchanging world. President Evans identified a number of potential opportunities for UIW in a February 2024 position paper, Embodying the Mission in a New Era, including better attracting, retaining, and serving students; enhancing the academic experience and UIW's academic standing through research (especially faculty-student research); and leveraging the strengths and areas of synchronicity across the UIW system. The University hosted a number of listening sessions with university constituents in the 2024 spring semester and will continue discussions over the course of the 2024-25 academic year. However, given the central role of academics in strategic planning, UIW has slowed its process so that the next Provost will be able to contribute to the goals and strategies that will help define UIW's future.
The next Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs must be a leader with significant administrative experience in higher education, including at least three years of experience in a dean's position or higher, and a demonstrated ability to advocate for a diverse set of academic disciplines. This individual must have a passion for UIW's mission to educate men and women who will become concerned and enlightened citizens within the global community and an understanding of the Catholic Intellectual Tradition and Catholic Social Teaching. The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate from a regionally accredited institution and an academic record suitable for appointment at the rank of full professor.
