Reporting to the Executive Director of the Rowland Institute, the physical sciences Research Operations Manager will combine technical and experimental support, design and prototyping, with safety and research operations&nbsp;to enable cutting-edge experimental science across physics, engineering, and materials research.Based full-time in the newly renovated 60 Oxford Street facility in Cambridge, MA, this individual will manage and continually improve shared physical sciences laboratories and fabrication spaces, including a cleanroom, chemistry room, and shared experimental lab spaces. The successful candidate will maintain and operate a diverse suite of advanced scientific instrumentation (e.g., microscopy, spectroscopy, and vacuum systems); operate and modify custom experimental apparatus; and partner with Rowland Fellows and their research groups to translate ambitious ideas into reliable experimental setups.In addition to overseeing shared facilities, the Research Operations Manager will serve as the Institute’s primary Laboratory Safety Officer (LSO) for the physical sciences, working with Harvard Environmental Health &amp; Safety to promote a strong culture of safety, compliance, and best practices. Job-Specific Responsibilities: Operations &amp; Shared Facilities Management<ul><li>Assist Rowland Fellows in evaluating and purchasing new equipment; liaise with vendors to negotiate, procure, and install new equipment.</li><li>Manage shared physical science fabrication and research equipment at the Rowland Institute, including inventory, service contracts, and usage scheduling.</li><li>Maintain equipment through repairing and preventive maintenance, and coordination with vendors when necessary.</li><li>Provide training to researchers on scientific instrument best practices, usage, and safety. Job Description Job Summary: The Balskus lab is searching for a technician to provide experimental support for an on-going project aimed at developing therapeutics for the vaginal microbiome. Working closely with senior lab members, the technician will primarily be responsible for assisting in the design, execution and analysis of assays that assess microbial growth, metabolism, and enzymatic activity. Additionally, the employee will assist with other tasks that support the operation of the overall lab, as described in more detail below. The research assistant may work on an independent project, but within specific guidelines. Strong organizational and communication skills are critical. Final candidates may be asked to demonstrate their technical ability through an in-lab demonstration. 
Job-Specific Responsibilities: <ul><li>Under supervision of a senior lab member, assist in the design and execution of assays to assess anaerobic bacterial growth or enzymatic activity. This includes aliquoting clinical samples and testing these samples for enzymatic activity. This will also include the preparation of vaginal bacterial cultures for testing in various enzymatic assays.</li><li>Assist in the maintenance of equipment and instrumentation for these analyses including lab automation instruments such as a Biomek iSeries and other liquid handling instruments.</li><li>Inoculation and maintenance of anaerobic microbial cultures from freezer stocks in preparation for assays.</li><li>Preparation and sterilization of growth media.</li><li>Purification of enzymes.</li><li>Preparation and analysis of samples through using various analytical methods, in particular small molecule liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), quantitative PCR (qPCR), RNA-Seq, and biochemical assays on clinical samples and cultures.</li><li>Working with a senior lab member, develop workflows for processing and analyzing the resulting data using python. Report results using a variety of scientific, word processing, and presentation platforms.</li><li>Maintenance and cleaning of additional laboratory equipment and glassware.</li><li>May instruct other lab members in certain techniques or procedures. Job Description Job-Specific Responsibilities: Reporting to the University Chief Research Compliance Officer, the SRCO is a highly skilled individual with in-depth knowledge of most, and working knowledge of other, regulatory areas of research compliance. Under minimal guidance from the Chief Research Compliance Officer, the incumbent is capable of establishing effective research compliance policies, procedures, and guidelines, in accordance with the seven elements of an effective compliance program pursuant to the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. This requires examining regulatory requirements and working with the respective departments and schools, to assess an approach and lead the development and implementation of an exemplary compliance program. The incumbent represents the Office of the Vice Provost for Research on a number of university-wide committees and is expected to engage at the national level, represent Harvard at national meetings and build national reputations. Under the direction of the Senior Research Analyst, the Fellow will work with internal Harvard clients on analytics consulting projects, ranging from student enrollment management and graduate outcomes to University-wide surveys and faculty trends.The ideal candidate will have experience with, or an eagerness to learn more about, multiple steps in the data lifecycle, including acquisition, cleaning, processing, analysis, and visualization.&nbsp; Knowledge of basic statistical methods is also desirable, as well as comfort working with quantitative and/or qualitative data.&nbsp;An interest in higher education and the organizational structure of universities is a must.We will consider applicants from all academic backgrounds and schools, and we encourage recent Harvard College and graduate/professional school graduates to apply.Primary responsibilities include:<ul><li>Collaborate with team members to produce descriptive and inferential analyses using data from a variety of sources and statistical software.</li><li>Work with team members to collect and refine data from personnel across the University.</li><li>Assist with creating deliverables such as slide decks, interactive files, or dashboards.&nbsp;</li><li>Assist with ensuring thorough project documentation and metadata are maintained.</li><li>Assist with OIRA events, training and outreach as assigned.</li></ul>THIS IS A TERM POSITION ENDING ON 12/31/2026&nbsp; Qualifications Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications to be considered for this role:<ul><li>Bachelor’s degree</li><li>Experience working with quantitative or qualitative data either through coursework or on the job.</li><li>Knowledge of at least one programming language or statistical software package (preferably R) and a strong interest in learning R.&nbsp;</li><li>Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.</li></ul>Additional Qualifications and Skills: <ul><li>Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively on a team.</li><li>Experience working in a higher education setting, or strong interest in learning more about higher education.&nbsp;</li><li>Excellent analytical skills and some knowledge of statistics, either through coursework or job-based experiences.</li><li>Strong quantitative skills.
